Bay Area Latin Rock legends are celebrating 40 years of music! They will be joined

    MALO:
Legendary Latin Rock band Malo is one of the most successful and enduring Latino

Malo's line-up has been a virtual who's who of Latin Rock all-stars, including trumpeteer
Luis Gasca, percussionists Pete & Coke Escovedo, Francisco Aguabella, and

    Bio:
Candelaria combines the infectious rhythms of traditional Colombian cumbia with the dub reggae
techniques of the Jamaicans studio masters. Bucking the modern trend of programmed beats and
computer effects, all of Candelaria's music and effects are 100% live and organic, all performed in
real time on stage. This 6 piece, female fronted world dance band brings together experienced
musicians from Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the United States. Truly independent,
Candelaria wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered their debut CD at their own studio in Oakland CA.
Their irresistible combination of the traditional with the modern has moved crowds at from Ensenada
Mexico to Humboldt County. They have shared the stage with legends such as Jimmy Cliff, Celso Pina,
Toto la Momposina, Bomba Estereo, Bituaya, La Santa Cecilia, and Pato Banton. Burning up the
dancefloor and blowing minds, Candelaria is a performance you won't soon forget.

Don't miss our first theatrical production featuring Kate Kilbane & The Cellar Doors at Inner
    Mission March 16th!

Kate Kilbane & The Cellar Doors:
Kate Kilbane & The Cellar Doors are a captivating experiment in Rock, Jazz, Soul and Theatre.
Their original production "Weightless" recently played four completely sold out shows and won
"Best of Fringe" at the SF Fringe Festival. SF Weekly called it "One of the best shows of the year"
and the SF Chronicle called it, "an outright revelation!"
Lead by charismatic lead singer, bassist, and self-ascribed literary geek Kate Kilbane, The Cellar
Doors have created a performance and sound that walks the fine line between a high energy rock
show and off broadway rock opera.
Kate Kilbane grew up in the theater. The daughter of two English professors, she was acting by 6
and directing at 13. After years of training in classic Greek plays and Shakespeare, she teamed up
with composer, pianist and saxophone player Daniel Moses and decided to render her love of
language and her innate sense of the theatrical in an unexpected context: a rock band.

Since then the group has created driving, catchy and strikingly original compositions rooted in ancient
Greek mythology. They have performed at clubs and theaters in over 20 cities across the Unitd States
including: Ars Nova and Littlefield in New York City, Room 5 in Los Angeles, The Red Poppy Art House,
Lost Church and Viracocha in San Francisco, The Dragon's Den in New Orleans, Kudzu's in Memphis,
Cafe Coco in Nashville, as well as venues in Portland, Philly, Cleveland, Chicago, Boulder, Omaha, and
Salt Lake City. Kate Kilbane & The Cellar Doors are a refreshing and original phenomenon in music and
theatre as well as a rapidly up and coming voice in the Bay Area music scene.

Based out of Austin Texas "The Love Leighs" have created their own unique
sound and style which has been described at "new-Timey" 20th Century
American roots music. The group combines the ukulele strums and stunning,
angelic and sultry voices of Raina Leigh and Jessica Leigh with the soulful,
eclectic guitar stylings of Jimmie Dreams and the formidable Josh Flowers on
upright bass. Their original compositions never fail to start toes tapping and
dancers dancing, bringing you the twisted, delightful, dark, sizzling and sassy
songs you've always longed for. You'll think you've heard their songs before,
though they are as fresh as the band's on-stage banter. Their tightly threaded
three-part harmonies, lively grooves, and Vaudevillian flair have been featured
in world-wide syndication on the Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour, as well as
on the foremost uke-centric web hub, UkuleleHunt.com. This will be their first
San Francisco performance at "The Red Poppy Art House", the Mission institution
that just celebrated their 10 year anniversary! The Love Leighs will be joined by

    LoCura bio:
CALIFAS MESTIZO MUSIC: Direct from San Francisco’s fertile music scene, LoCura taps into the diverse sounds
that have a rich history in the Bay Area, weaving them together in an uncanny way to reveal their common roots.
Mixing Flamenco with Reggae and Cumbia with Ska through contagious rhythms and multiple languages, their
music takes you on a ride through a day in the emerging globalized experience where the movement of people
and ideas are in constant flux. Reflecting lead vocalist Kata’s own experience of growing up Spanish American
in Spain, Italy, and the U.S., LoCura’s music rides the borders of identity and migration piecing together a mosaic
of our myriad cultures and experiences. In Spain the expression "Ida y Vuelta" is used to describe certain styles
within Flamenco that made a "round-trip" from Spain to Latin America, mixing with music from the African slave
and Indigenous populations. With this idea of music traveling and music as creative resistance, LoCura takes
the trip back again mixing it up with their own Califas Flamenkito, Reggae, and Cuban Son styles. Moved by the
music that crosses borders and takes root in different lands, LoCura draws from this creative 'rebelde' spirit to
cultivate the cures passed on from our ancestors.

The Seshen is a 7-piece Bay Area-based band whose songs mix live and
electronic elements. Their music utilizes electronic textures to
suggest complex emotions and vivid imagery but also to blur the
distinction between the abstract and the familiar. The Seshen takes
influences from electronic music, hip-hop, pop, R&B, dub, and indie
rock to create beat-driven compositions with a strong emotional core.
The band consists of bassist/producer Aki Ehara, drummer Chris
Thalmann, keyboardist Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and
synchronizer/sampler Kumar Butler, who provide the sonic backdrop for
vocalists Lalin St. Juste and Akasha Orr.

Sins Invalid is a performance project that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities,
centralizing artists of color and queer and gender-variant artists as communities who have
been historically marginalized. Our performance work explores the themes of sexuality,
embodiment and the disabled body. Conceived and led by disabled people of color, we
develop and present cutting-edge work where normative paradigms of "normal" and "sexy"
are challenged, offering instead a vision of beauty and sexuality inclusive of all individuals

  •  Friday August 10th
    La Gente
    will be performing @
    The de Young Museum
as part of the "Global Village" Performance series
in conjunction with The current "Jean Paul Gaultier" exhibit

    "Global Village"
Global Village is a multi-disciplinary music and dance performance piece that will take place on August 10th
at The de Young Museum in conjunction with the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit curated by Rafael Sarria &
La Gente Productionz. For over thirty five years Jean Paul Gaultier has created an artistic legacy that
deconstructs our preconceptions of identity and culture as well as abrasively juxtaposing contradictory
and complimentary visions of beauty and absurdity. In these performances we will attempt to reflect this
    vision using sound and motion.

In the same way that Jean Paul Gaultier has fused aspects of older classic fashion sensibilities with
modern, urban and street styles, we will utilize classic forms of music and dance and marry them to
modern innovative genres. We will focus on music and dance as poignant tools to highlight the cultural
diversity of Gaultier's influences and contrasting cultural identities. We also plan to feature Bay Area
artistic movements that subvert traditional forms of dance and music in order to attack our narrow
definitions of gender, constantly reinventing our masculine and feminine roles.

This collaboration will feature members of La Gente, Dholrhythms Dance Company, Sascha Jacobsen
& Trio Garufa, Raw-G, Nicole Klaymoon's The Embodiment Project, DJ Lady Ryan, and La Mixta Criolla.
They will be performing everything from Reggae to Bhangra to Cumbia to Tango to Hip-Hop, to modern
dance, to Soul and Electronic compositions

This event will be part of the Friday Nights at the de Young from 6:00-8:45pm and is FREEE!!!

    1. La Gente:
Led by Rafael Sarria this Bay Area based group has forged an original high energy musical style and
performance fusing Colombina Cumbia, Hip-Hop, and Jamaican Reggae. The group has toured
internationally and continues to spread a message of cultural unity.

    2. Dholrhythms Dance Company:
Dholyhthms is an organization dedicated to promoting the artistic and cultural heritage of India through
the beautiful Bhangra and Giddha folk dances of Punjab, India

    3. Sascha Jacobsen & Trio Garufa:
Sascha Jacobson is a bassits and composer who with his group "Trio Garufa" has created a progressive
and eclectic sound based of traditional Argentine Tango blended with electronic compositions.

    4. Nicole Klaymoon's The Embodiment Project:
As part of a new generation of artists that work in urban dance forms, EP pays tribute to the forgotten
struggles of pioneering street dancers as well as promotes a visionary perspective on traditional modern
    dance.

    5. DJ Lady Ryan:
Dj Lady Ryan is a Dj and Jazz vocalist who draws from Soul, Jazz, House and Hip-Hop in every
performance. She recently performed and promoted the SF Pride 20912 woman's stage.

    6. Raw-G:
Born and raised in Gaudalajara Mexico, Raw-G brings her own cross-cultural, multi-lingual politically
charged Hip-Hop to the ensemble. Her passionate and aggressive performances challenge our musical
and gender preconceptions of Hip-Hop culture.

    7. La Mixta Criolla:
La Mixta Criolla is a music and dance ensemble inspired by the rich and diverse musical culture of
Puerto Rico and the wider Caribbean. The band's repertoire of originals and funky renditions of classic
pieces, features a variety of swinging Latin Caribbean grooves.

Reggae. Cumbia. Flamenco. Hip-Hop. Ska. Salsa. Reggaeton. Rock

    LoCura:
CALIFAS MESTIZO MUSIC: Direct from San Francisco’s fertile music scene, LoCura taps into the diverse
sounds that have a rich history in the Bay Area, weaving them together in an uncanny way to reveal their
common roots.  Mixing Flamenco with Reggae and Cumbia with Ska through contagious rhythms and multiple
languages, their music takes you on a ride through a day in the emerging globalized experience where the
movement of people and ideas are in constant flux.  Reflecting lead vocalist Kata’s own experience of growing
up Spanish American in Spain, Italy, and the U.S., LoCura’s music rides the borders of identity and migration
piecing together a mosaic of our myriad cultures and experiences.  In Spain the expression "Ida y Vuelta" is
used to describe certain styles within Flamenco that made a "round-trip" from Spain to Latin America, mixing
with music from the African slave and Indigenous populations. With this idea of music traveling and music as
creative resistance, LoCura takes the trip back again mixing it up with their own Califas Flamenkito, Reggae,
and Cuban Son styles. Moved by the music that crosses borders and takes root in different lands, LoCura
draws from this creative 'rebelde' spirit to cultivate the cures passed on from our ancestors.
